What are Aeration Systems

Aeration systems are ways of adding air to water in order replenish its oxygen levels. The more air that is pumped into the water the better the circulation, thus reducing chances of bacteria build up and stratification. This process is most commonly used with non-free flowing bodies of water such as lakes, ponds, farm dugouts, reservoirs etc...

The oxygen that is pumped into the water is extremely effective in breaking down organic matter and sludge (beneficial bacteria that culminates at the bottom).

Residential Ponds

These recreational applications often apply in order to eliminate the foul smell of rotten eggs caused by stagnated water. The clean, clear water looks good and also helps reduce mosquitoes in the area.

Fish Hatcheries

Fish Hatcheries need extra oxygen in their water to burn up additional amounts of pollution created by the large amounts of fish waste and to lower the amount of fish kill caused by the lack of oxygen.

Aeration improves dugout water quality

Data in a current PFRA study has shown that continuous long-term aeration improved water quality by significantly reducing total and reactive phosphorous, chlorophyll a, color, and also increases water clarity. Aeration assists the natural ecosystem reduce the stress put on it by oxygen depleting processes, such as organic loading, which are amplified by high evaporation in the summer and ice cover in the winter. This study, supported and funded by the Canada-Saskatchewan Agri-Food Innovation Fund, is documenting aeration benefits and looking at more effective and efficient aeration designs [...]
